German Expressionism (Film Studies)

German expressionism is all about dark lighting, dramatic acting, and distorted set designs. Germans produced films of horrifying images, that also showed psychological and social themes. In The Cabinet of Doctor Calagari you sort of felt misplaced. The sets were all built in order to follow the mind set of the protagonist. In Metropolis you can recall images of a "sci-fi" movie.
Some of the most famous movies are The Cabinet of Doctor Calagari and Metropolis. In both, vivid images still replay in your mind. Also, you can't seem to forget the chiaroscuro lighting. In both these movies, the placement of darkness with one beam of light mattered.
